Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between microblading and powder brows?

Microblading and Powder Brows are both PMU techniques that involve depositing pigment into the skin to produce semi-permanent eyebrow enhancements. Though they are similar this way, they differ in terms of their processes, suitability for different skin types and overall appearance.

Microblading technique uses a hand held blade to etch hyper-realistic hair-like strokes into the skin to add shape and density to the brow. This technique is best suited for those with normal to dry skin and no visible pores.

Powder Brows technique uses a gentle machine with a tiny needle to create micro pixels throughout the brow, resulting in a very soft powdery look that blends with the natural brow hair. This technique is suitable for all skin types.

Both techniques are customized based on each individual client.

How do I know if I am a good candidate?

Anyone can benefit from receiving PMU. Whether you have full brows and are looking for a small enhancement or if you have no brows at all, the beauty of PMU is that it can be used in various different ways to produce great results in various different cases.

However, you are not considered a good candidate for PMU if you identify with any of the following:

– Any person who is under the age of 18 (consent required)
– Any person who is currently pregnant or breastfeeding.
– Any person with a serious heart condition should consult with their doctor
– Any person with a serious skin condition affecting the brow area such as eczema, rosacea, psoriasis or sun burn
– Any person who has undergone chemotherapy or radiation treatment within the past year should consult with their doctor before considering PMU
– Any person currently taking Isotertinoin (Accutane) or has taken Isotertinoin in the past year
– Any person who has a history of keloids or hypertrophic scarring
– Any person who is diabetic should consult with their doctor
– Any person who has an autoimmune disorder should consult with their doctor
– Any person who is currently sick with the cold/flu/ viral infection must reschedule their appointment
– Any person who particularly does not heal well or develops infections easily
– Any person who has received PMU on their eyebrows in the past should consult with their brow artist first to determine if they are a good candidate for the procedure
Any person who has received the covid-19 vaccination within the last 4 weeks

Is it actually a tattoo?

Powder Brows is a form of tattooing since it involves the process of depositing pigment into the skin, but it is different from the traditional tattoo method. Powder Brow pigments are not implanted into the skin as deep as a traditional tattoo and as such, the area will naturally fade and is considered semi-permanent.

Am I more suited for Microblading or Powder Brows?

Your skin type will determine which technique is best suited for you. Microblading requires a very specific skin type and is limited to those with normal to dry skin and no visible pores. The beauty of Powder Brow technique is that it is suitable for all skin types.

Do I need to book a consultation first?

A consultation is only required if you have previous PMU from another artist. Your consultation for this matter can be held virtually through photos or an in person consultation can be arranged if needed.

For those new to PMU who prefer a consultation before booking, virtual and over-the-phone consultations are available to you for your convenience, or you can book an in person consultation.

I do not need to see your eyebrows in person prior to your initial appointment. A consultation is held at the start of your appointment where we will discuss your particular case in detail and answer any questions you might have.

Can you work over top of my old microblading?

Please keep in mind that my goal for each client is to provide the best possible results. Though I would love to help make you love your brows again, it is important to understand that results are limited when existing work is present. If I feel that the existing work is too limiting to achieve an effective enhancement for your case, it is best that we do not move forward with the procedure. I will be more than happy to discuss with you some other options that are available for correction.

With that being said, if you are hoping to have previous PMU covered or enhanced, please contact Brow Papi to set up a consultation or send in photos of your brows clearly showing the existing work. I will review the photos and share what I think is best to move forward.

Keep in mind that touch up prices are for existing Brow Papi clients only and do not apply to cover-ups from previous work.

Is it painful?

Overall pain is quite minimal. A topical numbing agent is used to ensure the client remains comfortable during the procedure.

Is it safe if I am pregnant or breastfeeding?

Any person who is currently pregnant or breastfeeding is not a candidate to receive PMU.

How long does it last and how often will I need a touch up?

Since Powder Brow technique is considered semi-permanent, the work will fade over time. After the initial session, a complimentary touch up/perfection session is provided to achieve best results.

Some factors that will determine the longevity of your results:
– How well the aftercare is followed
– Sun exposure (SPF is always recommend to help preserve PMU)
– Oily skin types
– Lighter pigment colours
– Skincare and exfoliators (retinol, Retin A, Glycolic Acid, Salicylic Acid, Lactic Acid, AHA, Vitamin A)
– Chemical peels and any other cosmetic facial treatment that comes into contact with the tattoo
– Lifestyle
– Age

Please note that final results may vary as every person heals and retains pigment differently.

How long is the appointment?

Initial Powder Brow session: 2.5 hours
Initial touch up: 1 hour
Maintenance touch up: 1.5 hours

How do you know what shape and colour to pick?

Through consultation and collaboration, every set of brows that I create is completely customized to each individual client. I will use your facial features to create a shape that will compliment your face most naturally. The colour selection is based solely on the client’s natural brow hair and skin tone.

If your aesthetic goals are very specific you are encouraged to come to your appointment with photos and/or your regular brow makeup for inspiration.

What is the appointment like?

Step 1: Consultation
Upon arrival, a medical history form and consent/wavier form will be provided to you to fill out. Following, a consultation is held to discuss your brow goals and particular case in detail. Once I gather a solid understanding of your vision, we will go over all of the steps to ensure you are 100% comfortable and confident to get started. Any outstanding questions are answered at this time, so don’t come shy!

Step 2: Photos
With your consent I will take photos of your bare brows. This will give you the chance to see your before and after Brow Papi transformation!

Step 3 : Shape
I will begin mapping your brows using your facial features and natural brow shape. The shape that I create is always customized and tailored to your individual anatomy and main concerns. You will have the opportunity to see the pre draw and recommend any suggestions or ask any questions. We always work together during the shaping process and take our time mapping your brows until the shape is exactly how you want them look.

Step 3: Colour Selection
Once the final shape is approved we will select the pigment colour. The colour we chose is always based off of your natural brow hair colour and skin tone. Though many clients think they want a darker brow, I always prefer selecting a colour that is conservative to the natural brow hair colour at the initial session. We will assess the fully healed colour at your touch-up appointment and if we feel that the colour is too light we can adjust the darkness if necessary.

Step 5: Machine work & numbing
I will begin using the machine to create your Powder Brows. I always like to do a small little patch on the brows so you can get a feeling for the machine on the skin before completing the rest of the brow. Numbing is always applied after I have completed 1 full pass with the machine on each brow.

Step 6: Reveal/Finishing touches
As the brows get closer to completion, I will have you check them out in the mirror to get your opinion. Based on your opinion we will apply any finishing touches to make them perfect for you.

Step 7: Aftercare
You made it! This is where I need your listening ears. After the procedure we will go over the aftercare instructions that must be followed diligently. The better you follow the aftercare instructions the better your healed results will be.

Step 8: Touch Up
In 4-6 weeks following your initial appointment, a complimentary touch up session is provided to correct any imperfections that may occur during the healing process. All before and aftercare instructions apply to the touch up appointment as well.

What can I expect after the treatment?

Please keep in mind that post-procedure expectations may vary based on skin type. PMU is a whole process. Most people are not in love throughout every step of the healing stages. Remain patient and trust the process.

Immediately after the procedure the brows will appear darker than they will be once they are fully healed. The colour will soften about 30-40% once fully healed.

The treated area is sensitive and a little bit swollen and the surrounding skin may feel tight and slightly tender immediately after. If you have sensitive skin the pigment may appear warmer in tone or slightly red. This is not how they will look when fully healed. In 1-2 days when the redness in the skin begins to subside the colour will cool down. The brows may darken over the first 1-4 days as scabbing begins to form. Do not panic. As the scabs and dry areas within the brow area l begin to flake off and shed during about 1 week after, the brows will start to soften. The procedure area may feel itchy at this time, but it is important that you do not scratch or pick the area.
